C A mosquito becomes a heartworm carrier when it bites an infected dog and ingests the microfilariae, which are like "baby" heartworms.  Then the infected mosquito bites a healthy dog, and transmits the microfilariae to the bloodstream of the healthy dog.  One infected mosquito can infect many healthy dogs.
