Distemper (CDV):
Widespread, often fatal disease, which
can cause vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia, and respiratory and neurological
problems. Despite its name, this disease does not directly affect a dog’s
personality, but the symptoms that come with it may cause lethargy
(sluggishness) and depression.
Hepatitis (CAV-1): Viral
disease transmitted through contact with an infected animal or its stools
or urine, which may lead to severe damage of the liver, kidneys, spleen
and lungs. Symptoms include a high fever, abdominal pain, and lack of
appetite.
Leptospirosis: Bacterial
infection that may lead to permanent kidney and liver damage. It may be
contagious to humans and spreads through contact with infected urine or
contaminated soil or water. Symptoms include a high fever and unusual
bowel movements.
Parvovirus (CPV): Highly
contagious and potentially fatal disease, which may cause severe
vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Puppies are especially susceptible to this
disease, but all dogs may be at risk if not vaccinated. The most common
forms of transmission are contact with a contaminated dog, its belongings
or feces.
Parainfluenza (CPI): One of several organisms that most commonly contributes to
other respiratory diseases like Kennel Cough, either on its own or in
combination with other organisms.
Adenovirus (CAV-2 ): Another
organism that is most commonly associated with contributing to Kennel
Cough. Also found as another strain named CAV-1, which is less common in
causing Kennel cough on its own.
Coronavirus (CCV):
Contagious viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract
which causes vomiting and diarrhea and usually targets puppies, but older
dogs are also susceptible. This vaccine is only given to puppies in their
first 2 sets of initial vaccines.
Lyme Disease: Bacterial
disease transmitted by ticks, which can cause damage to joints, kidneys, and other
tissues. Symptoms include severe pain, lameness, loss of appetite, and
lethargy. Tick control products are also recommended to prevent infestation
and transmission of the disease.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Also known as Infectious Tracheobronchitis, this highly
contagious disease is caused by several different organisms that can pass
quickly through a large group of dogs that are in close quarters. The involved
organisms can work alone or in combination with one another to create symptoms
that include a dry, hacking cough, gagging and possibly watery eyes and/or
nasal discharge.
